"A portrait of my son, once a week, every week, in 2014."

William, doing the watering. He loves this job (what kid wouldn't) and takes it very seriously. He's quite proud of the potato patch he has been lovingly watering since we planted months ago, and in the process, I guess he's learning about growing food. He turns from his chair at the dining table to point out the window at the potato's growing: 'dato, dato'.

William, a tired boy watching the beautiful November rain falling.

William, with a mouth full of not-yet-ripe plums. We cannot keep him away from the fruit trees, little forager that he is. I'm not too fussed really. There's still plenty of plums out of reach (and apples, and nectarines), although he has worked out how to grab a branch, pull it down and get the higher up fruit. I'm not complaining, I think it's lovely that he's so into foraging in the garden. I hope the interest stays and grows.

"A portrait of my son, once a week, every week, in 2014."

William, on a lazy Sunday morning. We stayed in pj's for ages, and ate our rice porridge on the couch. Back to normal routine tomorrow!

William, learning what the hammer is all about. Helping Dada build a chook house, and looking every bit the part. He's a strong one, that's for sure. Looking so grown up these days it's scary, really.

William with the hose. Anything involving water is his favourite thing right now.

Things are browning off and we're still not even at summer yet. Looks like it might be a hot and dry one, again.

"A portrait of my son, once a week, every week, in 2014."

William, under the shade of the very old pear tree. On our visit to Melliodora permaculture garden last weekend, this boy had lots to explore. A pretty tough ask for an 18 month old, he did an amazing job while we took turns to learn what we could.

William, with the stash of eggs. We were starting to think Frankie had gone off the lay, but I had my suspicions that she had just found herself a cozy spot in the garden. Suspicions confirmed, and a very important job for a little boy. When you're used to collecting one or two eggs per day, this certainly looks like a lot of eggs. We left her one for her nest, hopefully she'll stick to the same spot.

"A portrait of my son, once a week, every week, in 2014."

William, looking oh so grown up. 18 months old and ready to take on the world. Got some new (old) boots on, just like mama and dada's. And something in hand, could either be a chip or white bread, both of which have been discovered this week. We bought a rare packet of chips and lets just say, he's taken to them like a duck to water. Lucky we don't have them very often. And the white bread, well that was a little horse treat, but a little person is more interested in eating it himself. We don't have that very often either (ever, actually).

William, having a great time in the long grass. A handful has been picked to feed to a pony (actually not very enticing for a pony, in these lush surrounds). Loving the space and the natural play out here.

William, my little baker boy. Every day at the moment we do some baking. He just loves it. His favourite part is pouring the flour into the mixing bowl. I think the next favourite thing is the egg going in, he loves anything to do with eggs (and chickens). And the next favourite bit is having a little taste of the baking before it gets baked, which sometimes turns into a big taste if mama isn't watching closely.

I still haven't had time to make us our baking aprons. Do you know of any good simple patterns out there?

William, just hanging out in the wheelbarrow. As you do, when you're 17 months old. Helping mama with moving mountains of weeds around, and loving the ride.

"A portrait of my son, once a week, every week, in 2014."

William, heading for home. Afternoons these days always see us heading out the back gate, for a wander around the quiet streets or to say hello to the horses living in the paddock behind us. William is mastering the art of closing the gate, amongst many other things. He is loving the space here; we're all loving the space here.

"A portrait of my son, once a week, every week, in 2014."

William, at the window watching for trucks. Living across the road from a grain silo, we see a fair few of them now, and I'm surprisingly not bothered by it. Probably as they rumble past very slowly, not at speed. This little boy is pretty fascinated with them. And the windows still need a wash. And the front garden needs attention. Things for a mama to contemplate, while for William gets on with the important stuff.

"A portrait of my son, once a week, every week, in 2014."

William, looking so grown up at the sandpit cafe. Enjoying a bubacino, we had the place to ourselves on a beautiful sunny winters day. The perfect way to ease the tensions of moving into a new home that requires so much cleaning and sorting - just to put our things away - a day out in sunny Bendigo. I even let him eat some little marshmallows.

William, exploring the paddock. Long grass down the back, thankfully being winter I'm happy to let him crawl through it. Summer will be a different story… All much to a little boy's delight.

William, off to explore our new surrounds. Drawn like a magnet to the little muddy puddles all about the place. Thank goodness for gumboots, is all I can say.

"A portrait of my son, once a week, every week, in 2014."

William, with his very first bike, streamers and all. His legs are almost long enough to go around a pedal stroke. But despite not quite pedalling yet, his balance and ability to move himself comfortably on a bike is awesome. And he enjoys it. With a mountain biker for a mama and an old time bmx-er for a dada, I'm entirely not surprised at his taking to the bike like this.
